Estimate your session time

Select options

This calculator estimates total tattoo time and how many sessions you'll likely need. Most artists limit sessions to around four to five hours to protect your skin and their focus, so larger, detailed pieces are split across multiple visits with healing time in between. Your artist's speed and your pain tolerance will shape the real timeline.

Why session length is hard to predict

Estimating how long a tattoo will take is genuinely difficult because so many variables interact: the size and complexity of the design, the amount of fine detail and shading, the body placement, your pain tolerance and how still you can sit, and the individual artist’s working speed. This calculator produces a reasonable time range from the inputs you provide so you can plan your day and understand whether the piece may need more than one sitting.

What the estimate is based on

Larger designs and heavier detail or shading naturally take longer, while simple line work covers ground faster. Placement affects speed too — flat, stable areas are quicker to work on than curved or sensitive spots. The estimate blends these factors into an approximate range. Treat the upper end as realistic, because things such as breaks, stencil adjustments and skin that takes ink slowly can extend a session.

Planning for longer sittings

For any session beyond a couple of hours, prepare properly: eat a good meal beforehand, stay hydrated, and bring snacks and water for breaks. Very large pieces are frequently split across multiple appointments to protect the skin and to keep both you and the artist fresh, which usually improves the final result. Your artist will advise how they prefer to break the work up.

How long tattoos take by size

While every piece is different, these ranges give a realistic starting point. A tiny minimalist tattoo (a small symbol or a few words) often takes 30 minutes to an hour. A small-to-medium palm-sized design usually runs one to three hours. A large detailed piece such as a half-sleeve typically needs four to six hours and is sometimes split across sittings, while a full sleeve, back, or chest piece is almost always a multi-session project totalling anywhere from ten to thirty hours of work. Use the calculator above for an estimate tuned to your specific size, detail, and placement rather than these broad averages.

What changes the estimate the most

Beyond raw size, three factors move the number most. Detail and shading are the biggest: fine linework, realistic portraits, and heavy colour packing take far longer than bold, simple line tattoos of the same size. Placement matters too, because curved or bony areas like ribs, feet, and hands are slower and more painful to work on than flat, forgiving spots such as the outer arm or thigh. Finally, your own comfort affects the clock: the more breaks you need, the longer the appointment runs. Discuss all three with your artist when you book so the time and price quote match reality.

Common questions

Can breaks make it take longer? Yes, and that is fine. Short breaks help you stay still and comfortable, which ultimately produces cleaner work.

Why did my friend’s similar tattoo take less time? Differences in detail, placement, skin, and the artist’s technique all affect duration, so two “similar” tattoos can vary widely.

Is a faster tattoo better? Not necessarily. Quality and cleanliness matter far more than speed for something permanent.
